General AOS FAQ

  • Are you a nonprofit?

Right now we’re a loosely organized group with ties to other nonprofits in the community. We are exploring our options to become formal. In the meantime, this has been created not for profit but for community. All collected funds go directly towards activities, spaces, and equipment.

  • How do teams work?

Typically, we create teams on the spot. If there are only two teams competing you will see your friends and flirts either next to you or across the field. Most days, we change the teams up after a few rounds/innings. Just come to play and meet new people.

  • What does it cost?

Right now most of our activities are free to participate. Though, a few people spend money reserving fields and gyms and would appreciate the occasional donation. Some events like skiing or laser tag require entrance fees per person.

  • Is it only sports?

No. Despite the name, we are encouraging other non-athletic activities as well. Our gateway is sporting activities which get us outside, but we want to connect across Spokane’s queer friendly spaces. That said, don’t be afraid of the sports too, we welcome all bodies and abilities to participate.

  • What do I win?

A fun experience. Connection. Bragging rights. Maybe a homemade trophy.

  • How can I help?

So many ways! First, show up and participate. Become a familiar face. Second, suggest new activities and even better organize the logistics of these suggestions. We’re all volunteering our time, you can too!

  • Can non queer people participate?

Of course! We’re not checking membership cards. Our expectation is that everyone who participates understands that this is an inclusive environment… leave whatever toxic-gendered-competition behaviors in the 90s. But, for our allies, this isn’t a chance to be a voyeur or to only take from our spaces. The expectation is that you’re contributing to the health and vitality of the LGBTQ+ community.
